Cabrillo Playhouse concludes its 2026 reopening season with Around the World in 80 Days, running August 21 through September 13, with performances Thursdays through Sundays.
Adapted by Mark Brown from Jules Verne’s classic adventure novel, this fast-paced comedy transforms one of literature’s greatest journeys into a theatrical spectacle. Featuring just eight actors portraying 39 characters, the production is filled with quick costume changes, inventive staging, physical comedy, and nonstop surprises that keep audiences laughing while racing around the globe.
The story follows the meticulous English gentleman Phileas Fogg, who wagers that he can circumnavigate the world in just 80 days. Joined by his resourceful servant Passepartout, Fogg embarks on an unforgettable journey by train, steamship, elephant, and anything else that will keep him on schedule. Along the way, the pair encounters colorful characters, unexpected obstacles, and relentless detective Fix, who mistakenly believes Fogg is a notorious bank robber.
With its blend of comedy, adventure, and theatrical ingenuity, Around the World in 80 Days offers a fresh and imaginative take on one of the world’s most beloved stories, making it an entertaining experience for audiences of all ages.
Directing the production is Frank Minano, an award-winning director and co-founder of Inland Valley Repertory Theatre, a nonprofit theater company he helped establish in 1990. Minano has also helmed hundreds of plays and musicals, including several at Cabrillo Playhouse.
“Our production of Around the World in 80 Days embraces the spirit of theatrical invention, joyful absurdity, and fearless play. Inspired by the fast-paced comedy and imaginative storytelling of Monty Python and commedia dell’arte, we will create a world where anything can happen—and often does,” Minano said.
Around the World in 80 Days concludes Cabrillo Playhouse’s 2026 reopening season. The 2026-2027 season begins October 2 with The Addams Family. For tickets and more information, visit cabrilloplayhouse.org.
